Mirror's Edge

Mirror's edge is a curious game. On one hand it's very pretty graphically, and the sound design is top notch. The other hand holds the frustrating trial and error bullshit for the most part I would have rather not bothered with. The first few times that you miss the jump by inches is alright, but when you try multiple times just to fuck up on something little and have to do whole sections over again is a pain. Furthermore, while there is combat in this game, it is not the focus. You would think as a first person game, that you could just whip out a gun and shoot everything in sight, and nothing would be a challenge. However, the intent of Mirror's Edge is instead to run.
Or rather, run on the surface of buildings that is. Well, for most of the game I mean. Frequently you'll find yourself running inside buildings and it's rather disappointing. For the most part the entire last level is inside a building except for a few situations where you're dodging snipers. This is executed rather well, as you can jump and climb over almost anything in reach. Some "acrobatics" you can perform includes actions like wallrunning, some tightrope action on I-beams, long jumps from one roof to another, jump spins, etc. You can even tie in some of these into your combat style, not that you'll ever really use them anyways since most of the time you're better off running from any cops you see instead of confronting them. Other times, either on the rooftops or inside the buildings you'll have no choice but to shove your foot into their face.Having the game in first person view, makes it pretty interesting, however the game probably would have been a little better as a 2D game. Sometimes it was hard to tell what your limits were, with relation to jumping around the environments. Not always, as the levels were for the most part really linear, but you'd frequently second guess yourself thinking you wouldn't be able to make such a jump. Conversely, you'd miss a jump you think you could clearly make. I will give the game one thing though, each jump is like a leap of faith (wait, why did I just make the connection between that and the main character's name?).

Pros:
- Graphics
- Music
- Fresh application of the FPS genre
- Once you know what the game expects of you, the levels are that much more cinematic and fun

Cons:
- Combat
- Trial and error level design
- Story
- What's up with the animated cutscenes?
